Irony

I happened to watch a movie last night, a Kevin Spacey and Helen Hunt movie. Its called "Pay it forward". The theme, I thought, was extremely thought-provoking in the kind of world that we live in today. It was about an eleven year old seventh grade kid who comes up with this totally innovative idea to change the world in response to his Social Studies assignment for the year "Think of an idea to change the world, and put it into action". First off, I thought it was a brilliant assignment. Second, I thought this kid came up with an absolutely mindblowing idea. His idea was that he'd pick 3 people and help them out with stuff that they couldn't do by themselves and doesn't expect them to reciprocate. The 3 people he has helped pick 3 other people each and help them out and it goes on...The world would certainly be a better place, wouldn't it? Utopian, almost!:)

I couldn't help smiling at the idea and I was kind of rejuvenated by it. I got a feeling that may be the world is not irreparable after all. I went to bed with renewed hope. And guess what I see next morning! Someone broke into my car and stole my GPS. My GPS was worth $130. To steal a $130 worth gadget, that somebody who stole it did not even think twice to break the side window of my car which is worth atleast a 1000 dollars!!!! I know "thieves" don't think that way.

I couldn't help but question whether something called "humanity" exists. Looks like hunger/kleptomania/desperateness/sadism has replaced humanity very successfully on planet Earth. Isn't there anything that we can do about this? What did the director of "Pay it forward" think when he made the movie? So utterly naive of him.

  1. NP,Do not be so upset. Incidents such as this keep happening all the time. Humanity is only a kind of collective mirror. The poor man was surely looking for something valuable and he happened to find the GPS. Lets not read more than this into the unfortunate incident. It fortunate (GOD's grace) that he came looking for something when you were not there inside the car. That probably was GOD's way of protecting his dear one. Even the thief probably would not have got what he did if he had come and asked you for something.
By the way, that 3-helping-3-others-each formula was enacted quite interestingly in a Telugu movie by Chiranjeevi!
